The Colorful Houses Of Goa

Check out these beautiful houses!

GOA - Mission Accomplished!

GOA - the name has always conveyed a little magic to me for as long as I can remember. Perhaps this was because it was a favored destination for the hippies I would meet as a teenager when living in Bombay back in the late 60s. I was determined that one day I too would make it to Goa. Goa, the smallest state in India at approx 1400 sq miles, is located south down the coast from the state of Maharastra where Bombay is located. It was a Portuguese colony for hundreds of years until India forcibly annexed it in 1961. It is renowned for its miles of beaches, friendly people and good food. With only 940 people / sq mile (compared with Bombay's 57,000 people / sq mile) it felt very spacious. Phil had the great idea of renting scooters so we did a fair amount of exploring. Many miles of road consisted of large compounds (1/4 to maybe 1/2 acre), always surrounded by a brick wall with an often nice looking house in the middle. Many were painted beautiful vibrant colors. It was the sort of area I could easily see spending an enjoyable few weeks on a regular basis. However, I don't think the end of April would be the recommended time. With temperatures running about 38C (100F) and high humidity, sweat was always rolling even when doing nothing. In spite of that we had a great 2 days as Phil has described. Do not miss Goa if you get the chance!
